چکیده
Varicocele isanabnormalenlargementof the internal spermatic vein and pampiniform plexus of the testis. Most urologists believe that varicoceles arise from incompetent or absence of valves within the major veins of the testis, although other etiological factors nodoubtplaya role [1].Varicocele typicallyoccurson the left side, but bilateral varicoceles occur in more than 50% of patients [2]. In the general male population, the prevalence of varicocele is between 10 and 15%, but is as high as 40% among menwith infertility [3]. It is likely that the pathophysiological processes that promote varicocele begin as early as puberty because the incidence of varicocele in adolescents is similar to that of adults [4]. The association of varicocele and male infertility has been known for more than a century [5] and varicocele is now regarded as the leading cause of male infertility [6 && ]. The effect of varicocele on testosterone levels, however, has not been as well studied or defined. The studies conducted prior to 2011 have yielded results that are difficult to interpret, which has led to equivocal statements about the utility of varicocele repair for correcting hypogonadal levels of testosterone. Several recent studies, however, haveproducedconsistent evidence forboth the harmful effects of varicocele on testosterone production and for the restoration of normal

P-26: Comparison of Serum Testosterone Level between Men with and without Varicocele
Background: Varicocele suggests that in addition to effects on spermatogenesis, varicocele also impairs testicular Leydig cell function with a consequential decrease in testosterone production; correction of the varicocele may result in improved serum testosterone levels. Materials and Methods: We measured preoperative serum testosterone levels in 40 infertile men with varicoceles varicocele (g...
متن کاملEffects of varicocelectomy on serum testosterone
Varicocele is most often surgically repaired due to male infertility, however, has recently been linked to low serum testosterone. This paper serves to review the current literature regarding varicocele and its subsequent repair on serum testosterone. Twenty-eight human studies were identified with fifteen showing improved serum testosterone after repair. The majority of the studies that demons...
متن کاملWhen is a varicocele repair indicated: the dilemma of hypogonadism and erectile dysfunction?
In the past, the indications for varicocelectomy are primarily for infertility with abnormal semen parameters, testicular hypotrophy/atrophy in adolescents, and/or pain. The surgical treatment of varicocele for hypogonadism is controversial and debated. Recently, multiple reports in the literature have suggested that varicocele is associated with hypogonadism and varicocele repair can increase ...
متن کاملVaricocele – a case for early intervention
Testicular varicocele, which is defined as the dilation of the veins draining the testicle, has long been associated with a detrimental effect on testicular function. Despite a lack of high-quality, prospective data, recent evidence has shed light on potential links between varicocele and male infertility and serum testosterone levels. Similarly, varicocele repair has increasingly been shown to...
